How do we find the proverbial “Fountain of Youth?”
As human beings, we are made up of complex systems that constantly respond to all things in our environment. One way the body responds to us is expressed as pain. And while pain is uncomfortable, it’s also a powerful motivator!
Most people come to see me because something hurts. That pain is limiting them from doing what they love – playing golf, lifting weights, chasing grandkids, or simply moving without hesitation. Pain can be ignored for a while, but our bodies are intelligent. They give us warning signs when something isn’t right, and it’s our job to listen!
Because when we listen carefully, those warning signs can become opportunities.
Pain as a Starting Point, Not the End
When someone walks into my clinic in pain, I don’t just think about the injury in front of me. I start asking questions about longevity.
- What do you want your body to be able to do in 10 years?
- What activities matter most to you?
- What kind of energy do you want to have each day?
We all have different goals, but one thing is consistent:
We rely on our bodies to fulfill our mission in the world, whether that mission involves work, family, sports, or service.
As a physical therapist, I have the privilege of seeing patients over an extended period of time, giving us the opportunity to look beyond short-term pain relief and talk about something deeper: how to ensure a body that supports long-term living, goals, and aspirations.
The Four Buckets of Longevity
I enjoy educating patients on what I call Buckets of Longevity. One of my key skills is understanding the entire body and optimizing its performance to help people achieve their mission. My education as a doctor of physical therapy has equipped me with a variety of tools, knowledge, and strategies to help my patients fill these buckets. From my perspective, long-term health comes down to helping my patients fill these buckets:
1. Strength
Strength is foundational. Without it, everything feels harder – stairs, lifting, carrying, even posture. Strength protects joints, supports balance, and keeps you resilient.
2. Flexibility
Mobility allows you to move efficiently and comfortably. When flexibility declines, other areas compensate, often leading to pain or stiffness.
3. Balance
Balance isn’t just about avoiding falls. It reflects how well your nervous system, muscles, and joints communicate. It’s a key predictor of long-term independence and mobility.
4. Cardiovascular Health
Your heart and lungs fuel everything you do. Endurance supports recovery, energy levels, and overall vitality.
Every patient I see has the capability to fill all of these buckets. Some may have a few empty buckets, while others have them all full. I enjoy guiding my patients to understand and develop a plan to fill, or at least keep some water in each of these buckets. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s progress.
Why These Buckets Matter
I gain so much joy when patients begin intentionally filling these buckets. Then, something interesting happens.
My patients often share that they have never felt so good! They are enjoying life more than ever, including:
- Playing better tennis
- Outdriving their playing partners in golf
- Having more energy to play with their grandkids
- Sleeping better
- Feeling more confident in their bodies
It’s rarely just about pain relief. It’s about enjoying life more fully.
This is where physical therapy becomes more than rehabilitation. It becomes education, strategy, and implementation.
Through strength training, mobility work, balance development, and even supportive tools like massage therapy or manual therapy when appropriate, we help patients build systems that support longevity, not just short-term fixes.
Longevity Is a Daily Practice
One of the most fulfilling parts of my work is running into former patients who tell me they’re still doing the things we worked on together. They’ve seen the benefits firsthand and experienced how filling those buckets changes how they feel.
Longevity doesn’t come in a pill or a shortcut. It’s built intentionally through consistent movement, smart training, recovery, and awareness.
And the good news is: it’s never too late to start filling your buckets!
